Dental implants are the most popular solution for tooth replacement at our office in Jacksonville, IL. Patients with damaged or missing teeth can restore their smile and oral function with this natural-looking restoration.
What are dental implants?
There are three parts to a dental implant, and each part plays an important role in the success of your restoration. When the process is complete, the appearance and function of your new tooth will closely resemble those of a natural tooth.
- The first part of the implant, the titanium screw, acts as your tooth root. It fuses with the jaw bone and provides the foundation needed to support the other two parts.
- The abutment is the second piece of the restoration, and it connects to the titanium screw, allowing us to place the final part.
- The prosthetic crown, the final piece, is designed to look and function just like a natural tooth.
Benefits of Dental Implants
With several options for tooth replacement available, it is important to understand why dental implants are the best solution. Whereas most options only address patients’ smiles, implants offer improved oral function and oral health as well. The most common advantages seen with implant restoration include
- Simple care routine
- Jaw bone preservation
- Increased confidence
- Versatility in treatments
- Improved function
Other tooth replacement options lack the practical design of dental implants. As the only solution to restore the tooth root, they are subsequently the only solution to provide the stimulation needed to keep the jaw bone healthy — with other options, jaw bone deterioration is inevitable. Additionally, the fusion of the implant with the jaw creates a stable base and allows you to eat all the foods you love. We encourage you to contact our office in Jacksonville, IL, to hear more about the benefits and details of dental implants.
One of the many benefits of dental implants is that they can be used in a range of restorative procedures. At your consultation appointment, your oral surgeon will review your health history and examine your condition to determine which procedure best fits your needs. He will also discuss your goals for treatment, explain your options for sedation, and provide you with instructions for your pre- and post-operative care.
Once you feel confident about your procedure and what to expect, we can schedule your next appointment. We choose a later date for your procedure to give you time to go home and review your pre- and post-operative instructions and prepare for surgery. Please feel free to contact our office should any questions arise between your consultation and your procedure.
At your surgical appointment, our team will bring you back to the procedure room to administer your sedation. Once it has taken affect, your oral surgeon will begin the procedure. After carefully opening your gums, he will insert the titanium screw into your empty tooth socket. In most cases, he will stitch up your gums to complete the procedure, but in rare instances, he may also connect the abutment to the screw. If this is done, the abutment will poke through your gums during the healing period. Most often, however, he will place the abutment after the screw has had time to fuse with the jaw bone.
When your restorative dentist completes your custom prosthetic crown, you will return to our office. (If you are replacing multiple teeth, you may receive a custom-designed full set of teeth or an implant-supported bridge instead.) At this final appointment, we will connect the abutment (if it hasn’t been placed already) and attach your prosthesis to restore your smile permanently.
