About Dr. Stephens
Dr. Mark Stephens was born and raised in Springfield, IL, and attended Rochester High School. He completed his bachelor’s in chemistry in 2006 from the University of Illinois Urbana, Champaign. He then pursued his dental degree at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine graduating with honors in 2010. Following his dental training, he completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery internship year at Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign. He then completed a four-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Banner University Medical Center/University of Arizona in Phoenix, AZ, earning his specialty certificate in 2015. In August 2015, he was employed at Christie Clinic in Champaign, IL, and took trauma call at Presence Covenant Medical Center. He was given the opportunity to return to his hometown, and thus joined Oral and Facial Surgeons of Illinois in August 2016. His fiancé Karina is a full-time mom to their daughter, Kinley.
He feels very fortunate to be able to work in the community where he grew up and to be able to give back to the people who gave so much to him when he was young. Dr. Stephens has always enjoyed both medicine and dentistry, and because oral and maxillofacial surgery utilizes aspects of both specialties, he is able to practice what he loves every day.
Dr. Stephens was actually mentored by Dr. Russell Williams, one of the senior partners, during dental school and was one of the reasons he became interested in oral surgery. He was excited and humbled to have the opportunity to enter into practice with him.
He strongly believes in a patient-centric philosophy, in which focusing on the patients’ needs and goals are of the utmost importance. He works hard to always treat his patients like family and provide the best possible care, hoping each and every patient has a great experience while at OFSI.
Dr. Stephens practices full-scope oral and maxillofacial surgery but his interests are dentoalveolar and implant surgery, benign oral pathology, corrective (orthognathic) surgery, facial trauma and reconstruction, and office anesthesia.
Dr. Stephens is on staff at Memorial Medical Center and HSHS St. John’s Hospital and participates in dental infection and facial trauma call. He is also a part of the SIU School of Medicine Congenital Head and Neck Anomalies Clinic for cleft and craniofacial conditions.
