About Dr. Louis Scannura
Dr. Louis Scannura was raised on Long Island, in New York state, with two siblings as a first-generation American. As he grew up and began exploring career opportunities, he decided to pursue oral surgery because he felt it was an area where he could make a significant difference in people’s lives. Joining a private practice helps him focus more on being as patient-oriented as possible. His affiliation with the SIU medical school as a Clinical Associate Professor provides him with the opportunity to train surgical residents in the care of patients with maxillofacial deformities and acute facial trauma.
The most rewarding part of being an oral surgeon is the ability to make a lasting impact. Dr. Scannura works hard to make sure that patients understand they are getting the best oral surgical treatment possible when they visit him and the team at Oral & Facial Surgeons of Illinois.
Education & Residency
Dr. Scannura completed his undergraduate education at SUNY at Stony Brook, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in biology in 1978. After graduating, he began his dental education at Columbia University School of Dental Medicine. In 1982, he graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree and began his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in Manhattan. During his residency, he achieved competency to treat the full scope of oral and maxillofacial conditions. His anesthesia training allows for the safe administration of anesthetics to his patients. After serving as Chief Resident, he earned his specialty certificate after completing the program in 1985.
Certifications & Memberships
After residency, Dr. Scannura worked diligently toward his board certification in 1985. Becoming certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the pinnacle of the certification process, but it is by no means the end of the continuous education he pursues. Dr. Scannura was required to complete several extensive written and oral exams proving his excellent knowledge of the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty. As a board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Scannura is the highest qualified dental professional to treat any oral or facial condition. Dr. Scannura is also a member of the following organizations:
